Trends in the Art World will focus on readings and discussions about how the art world is structured and how its relationships with artists continue to evolve. April 25: An overview of how the contemporary art world is structured, an introduction to current trends, and to some artists whose work is being exhibited and written about.
May 2 Museums: What exactly do museum curators do? How have exhibitions changed over time? What trends do museum directors pay attention to?
May 9 Art Fairs: Why are there so many art fairs? What exactly is Art Basel Miami Beach, for instance, and how did it get that way?
May 16 Auction Houses: What effects are auctions having on the art market as a whole? What changes can we expect regarding artists’ rights when their works are sold at auction?
May 23 Galleries: How are the business relationships between artists and galleries changing? What do the best galleries do for their artists and for their collectors? How are galleries responding to pressures from online sales and auction houses? What online sales models have been tried?
May 30 Biennials and class wrap-up: How did the international biennials get started and how have they evolved? Who are the curators, and who selects them? What can we extrapolate from the trends we’ve examined in class?
