Yesterday, I went to a JP Forum meeting on the Green New Deal, a proposed non-binding resolution by which Congress would direct the federal government to re-orient energy production, transportation, federal purchasing, and more, away from petroleum and climate destruction and toward climate restoration and environmental justice. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Rev. Mariama White-Hammond provided background on the development of the GND, and on historic rifts between mostly white, upper class conservationists and environmental justice activists, who are mostly people of color. I asked about another rift that will have to be bridged before the US will ever do anything about climate change and environmental destruction: the chasm between the people of the cities and the people of rural areas. Lots of people are working hard in cities and in rural areas, but who is building bridges?
